Helping Relatives with Computer Problems

Gina Trapani has written a post for lifehacker describing an experience many of us will likely have this holiday season. Most of us will likely be asked to help family members troubleshoot computer problems. Gina provides resources to help us tackle the most common questions including…

  • “It takes forever to start up.”
  • “I keep getting a pop-up saying I need to pay for my antivirus software.”
  • “When I get on the internet things look weird”
  • “I keep getting these annoying popup ads.”
  • “I can’t find the digital photos I downloaded last month.”
  • “The internet stopped working.”

Take a look at the full article and take advantage of the resources to help you tackle these and other technical issues.

Here Comes Santa Claus…

As of the writing of this post Santa and his sleigh are only 7 hours and 33 minutes away from beginning their trip around the world. Boys and girls everywhere anxiously await and are curious about where the Jolly One is. You can track Santa’s flight using NORAD’s radar system and Google maps. You can also enjoy video footage of St. Nick and his entourage as they make their way to the homes of boys and girls. There are a variety of other interactive ways to enjoy this dash around the world.

What Is Your Favorite Christmas Show?

I ran across this list of favorite Christmas movies according the sales figures at Amazon. It made me think about the many shows that I’ve enjoyed with my family throughout my lifetime. Here are a few of my favorites (and one a couple I don’t care for but they remain hugely popular, so I included them). I’m curious how much you like these Christmas shows. Note that each show title is linked. Enjoy!

I Love My MacBook Pro

My new MacBook Pro arrived about two weeks ago. I’ve been using a PowerBook Pro and an HP Pavilion for the past 3.5 years and really liked both. I’m surprised at just how much better this new MacBook Pro is than both of them. Leopard is sweet! The integrated webcam and mic work well and it’s nice not having to lug them around as peripherals. I prefer Office 2008 for Mac over Office 2007 for Vista. There’s much more, but I’ll stop there for now!

I welcome any advice, suggested software or widgets, etc. related to making my MacBook Pro experience as good as possible.

Middle School Student Makes Scientific Breakthrough

Thirteen-year-old William Yuan…

….began working with solar cells two years ago, after science teacher Susan Duncan encouraged him to tackle an engineering project. He spent hours searching the Internet, brainstorming with Duncan, and talking with professionals before he found a topic that piqued his interest: the global energy crisis. Building on research from Georgia Tech and Notre Dame universities, Yuan found a way to improve the conversion efficiency and yields of solar cells.

Most solar cells absorb visible light to produce electricity, but his design harnesses both visible and ultraviolet light. That’s particularly helpful in cloudy areas, such as where he lives in the Pacific Northwest, because the solar cell can continue to generate electricity even when clouds obscure the Sun. To achieve this result, Yuan applied various coatings, integrated nanotubes, and added specialized nanostructures to a typical solar cell. Experts have given his method a thumbs-up. A Few Thoughts

  • Please consider reading the full story.
  • Congratulations William!!! Not only am I impressed by your discovery, but your diligence and ability to collaborate with others in resourceful ways is inspiring.
  • I send my respect and appreciation to Susan Duncan, William’s science teacher from 2 years ago, who seems to have played an instrumental and ongoing role in William’s personal work. I’d like to find her blog, website, etc. if it’s out there.

Discussion

  • What lessons can educators and parents learn from this?
  • What can other young people take away from William’s journey and scientific breakthrough?

No Way!!!

2008 Edublog Nominee for Best WikiI was informed by Robin Ellis that my wiki was nominated for an Edublog Award. Saying that I was shocked would be an understatement! I assume that this is related to the ebook and other course materials that emerged from our Teaching and Learning with Web 2.0 class this summer. I’m excited that the students get to see that their hard work and contributions to the PLN are valued.

Dean Mantz later mentioned that this blog had also been nominated 2008 Edublog Nominee for Best Teacher Blogand I didn’t take him seriously. He sent me the URL and I stared at my computer in disbelief. I greatly appreciate those that nominated these works and assure you that I hold absolutely no expectation of even being competitive in the voting given the company in these categories. I can honestly say that it is indeed an honor to have just been nominated!

I encourage you to browse through all the nominees, vote your favorites and make some additions to your RSS reader.

Recommended Santa Resources

(Repost from 12/13/2007)

I’ve spent some time trying to find good and trustworthy Santa sites in recent years. Each year I wind up coming back to Northpole.com. There are sites out there with more bells and whistles, more games, better graphic design, etc. However, I’ve found Northpole.com to be my favorite all-around Santa resource. I especially like the automated email correspondence that helps kids communicate with the big guy on an ongoing basis.

You’ll also want to visit NORAD’s Santa Tracking System throughout Christmas Eve to see how close Santa is to your home.

What holiday-related resources do you suggest?

I’m Thankful…

This post has been rolling around in my head for a couple of weeks but I didn’t get around to sharing it prior to Thanksgiving Day. I read Babbo’s Being Grateful Makes You Full of Greatness today and realized it would be good practice for me to go ahead and share some of the things for which I’m grateful.

I’m obviously thankful for family, friends, good health, a job, a home, our Savior, and all the other big and much more important things in life. This post is an effort to move beyond all of that and help me consider the countless other blessings in my life.

I’m Thankful…

  • for free Wi-Fi in public places like the airport in Charlotte, NC.
  • that there are often Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in the house.
  • when I can drive the speed limit the entire trip between home and work.
  • that we are no longer having to buy diapers!!!
  • for each person in my PLN. You’ve greatly impacted my professional development.
  • to hear that so many of my former elementary and middle school students are doing well in college and adulthood.
  • that the Mississippi State Bulldog community unanimously appreciates the character of now-former coach Sylvester Croom.
  • for the many Sonic Drive-Ins in the greater Memphis area.
  • that I won’t spend the Winter shoveling snow out of my own drive-way like my buddy Dennis.
  • for the many consulting opportunities and collaborations that came my way in 2008.
  • that this season of Heroes is really good.
  • for DVRs.
  • for hard-working and engaged graduate students. They are the reason I do what I do.
  • that gas prices aren’t so high right now.
