Professional Development Meme 2010

I’m a big fan of goal setting. It can provide a road map for the short or long-term and can be an effective motivational strategy. I have set a few professional development goals for this summer and have challenged a few of my friends/colleagues to do the same thing. In 2008 I realized that I could set this up as a blog meme and hopefully encourage some of my online friends to achieve a few items from their To Do Lists. There are a myriad of ways to approach this, but I’ve opted to take the short-term, easy-to-assess approach, but I’ll leave some wiggle room for you to customize it to meet your needs. The official information is below.

Directions

Summer can be a great time for professional development. It is an opportunity to learn more about a topic, read a particular work or the works of a particular author, beef up an existing unit of instruction, advance one’s technical skills, work on that advanced degree or certification, pick up a new hobby, and finish many of the other items on our ever-growing To Do Lists. Let’s make Summer 2010 a time when we actually get to accomplish a few of those things and enjoy the thrill of marking them off our lists.

An Ongoing Discussion: Your Input Needed

@Tykerman1 shared this interesting discussion starter and I thought we’d give it a try here.

Guidelines
Below is a question. The first person who is brave enough will read the question, answer it in the comments and pose a new question for the next person to answer. You can participate more than once.

Question #1
What are you most hopeful about with regards to education and the future?

7 Things You Don’t Need to Know about Me

I’ve procrastinated on this far too long. I’ve been tagged by Lisa Thumann, Paul R. Wood, Alan Lutz, Elaine Plybon, and others in the 7 Things You Don’t Need to Know about Me meme. (NOTE: Don’t confuse this with my 8 Things You Didn’t Know about Me meme responses from Summer 2007.)

  1. Dusk in the mountainsI can not stand the taste or smell of bananas.
  2. I was an accounting major my first year of college. Wow, was that a mistake for me!
  3. Horses are my favorite animals. I grew up on a horse farm.
  4. My wife coached college basketball before our kids were born.
  5. I bought my first “brand new” car in 1995. I’m still driving it today.
  6. I’ve given a lot of thought to becoming a full time church minister. I like that teaching allows me to spend my summers at church camp and on mission trips.
  7. Of all the places in the world that I’ve visited Switzerland is my favorite (Specifically Adelboden, Switzerland. See the image above and map below). This is a bit ironic because I much prefer water skiing over snow skiing. Greece is at the top of my list of places that I still want to visit.

I tag John Dobbs, Tom Barrett, Patrick Higgins, Leigh Zeitz, Bob Sprankle, Kristin Hokanson, Jeff VanDrimmelen, John Curry and Drew Polly.
