BarCamp Memphis

BarCamp Memphis, November 13, 2010

“BarCamp isn’t just a Web 2.0 conference. It’s an unconference.cWhat does that mean, exactly? Well… that’s up to you. The entire event will be crafted by attendees (you), so you can learn about the specific technologies, trends, gadgets you really want to learn about – and hear from the people you find interesting. We’ll be voting first thing in the morning to determine the day’s sessions. Totally crowd-sourced!” (Source)

Our Family’s Favorite App

I decided to share AudioBoo during my presentation at TeacheMeet Memphis. Our kids and I have a lot of fun with this service. AudioBoo makes podcasting and audio blogging a snap and can positively impact your classroom (See previous posts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). Here are my notes as well as the Ustream archive from my session. My full presentation notes are also available on my wiki, Learning Telecollaboratively.

Wrap-Up of Mid-South EduTweetUp (Aug. 2010)

(Cross-Posted from Martin Institute Press Releases)

The first Mid-South EduTweetUp of the 2010-11 school year was held last Tuesday evening at Panera Bread Co. in East Memphis. 25 people representing several school districts and area independent schools enjoyed an informative evening of networking and idea-sharing.

The goals of the Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence were shared and the details of the 2010 Fall Conference were announced.

Also included in the evening’s festivities was a Web 2.0 Smackdown, where attendees had the opportunity to demonstrate their favorite Web 2.0 tool and share how it can be integrated with teaching and learning.

Thanks to everyone that participated and made this a fun and informative event. The next EduTweetUp is scheduled in conjunction with the 2010 Martin Institute Fall Conference on Friday evening, October 1. Click here for details.

Wrap-Up of Memphis EduTweetUp (May 2010)

Memphis’ inaugural EduTweetUp was a great event. Eighteen teachers from many different schools and districts in the greater Memphis area, Tipton County, TN, and Byhalia, MS, enjoyed an evening of food and fun as we networked and shared ideas. The Web 2.0 Smackdown was a fun way for us to share online technologies and services and discuss strategies for integrating them with teaching and learning. A special thanks to Melissa Smith for co-organizing the event.

Below are the slides from the meeting followed by a few resources from the evening.

    Remembering Dr. King

I’ve visited the National Civil Rights Museum several times recently as we’ve had friends and colleagues come through Memphis. Standing near the place where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated never ceases to move me. Although many will spotlight Dr. King’s I Have a Dream speech (which I’ve also done in the past) this MLK Day, I have decided this year to spotlight his final speech referred to as I’ve Been to the Mountaintop (View full text). It was actually given at the Mason Temple here in Memphis the night before his death. I created the below Wordle of this speech to present the major topics from this passionate dream of a new day.

“While the untimely death of Dr. King was the end of an era, it also marked the beginning of a movement – to take the lessons we learned from his vision and transform our future.” (Source)
